A Simplified Way of Home Décor, Different from the 1950s

A Simplified Way of Home Décor, Different from the 1950s

The 1950s was the golden decade in the States. Home décor and home design in 1950s were totally different from what we have today. Housewives in 1950s considered kitchen and dining room was the center of the family, and they kept the house spotless and threw dinner parties with fine and exquisite table setting. I think The Stepford Wives (2004) starred Nicole Kidman can clear see how the houses were exquisitely furnished and decorated, and everything looking pristine and dustless.

However, with significant change since the 1950s, women of today take parts on an equal footing to men. We devote ourselves to work and personal growth. There are some changes in our daily lives. We order takeout after work instead preparing homecooked meals; we watch Netflix on weekends rather than throwing dinner parties like the old times.

So, it is interesting to see the change of lifestyle affecting purchasing decision. A 33 year-old designer, reported in the blog article of The Washington Post, using paper towel as napkins at the dinner table. According to the Mintel’ report, only 56% of people purchase paper napkin, and 86% of people choose to buy kitchen towel. Nancy Mitchell, the writer at Apartment Therapy, uncovered that “dinner parties are a lot less common than they used to be, and when people do have them they focus more on the food itself than on setting the table…people just don’t own napkins anymore.”

We can notice that we, as millennials, are into simplifying our lives. The reason of decorating your house or table setting is not for wowing people by taking financial risks, but for making your house the oasis of coziness and comfort, even staying in a rental. So, applying some textures in the house helps to create an inviting and cozy mood with little expense comparing to luxurious furniture purchasing. You may add a bit of knits glam to create a handmade touch. (Shop Knits in less than $25) Also, layer a rug next to or at the foot of your bed can add extra color to your space. (Shop Rug in less than $40) A decorative pillow can be eye-catching and casual texture in your room. (Shop Dec Pillow in less than $23)

Hope you all find some creative but simple and budget-savvy ways to make your rooms welcoming with some visual interests.
